Power Generation flange sourcing guide

Power plant flanges span the widest temperature range in industrial service — from -162°C LNG receiving terminal vaporizers to 620°C ultra-supercritical steam lines. Material selection follows ASME B&PV Code Section I (power boiler) or Section III (nuclear). This page catalogs the standards, materials, and traceability requirements for thermal, hydro, nuclear, and renewable power applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum temperature A182 F91 can handle?

A182 F91 (9% chromium, 1% molybdenum, vanadium + niobium) is designed for ultra-supercritical steam service up to 620°C continuous and 650°C peak. It maintains creep resistance 100x better than F22 at 600°C. For 700°C+ service, transition to austenitic stainless (TP304H, TP316H) or nickel alloys (Inconel 617, 740H).

Do you hold ASME N-stamp for nuclear?

No. We hold ASME U-stamp (pressure vessels) and S-stamp (power boiler). For nuclear Section III Class 1/2/3 components, we supply material to nuclear-grade specifications and ship to nuclear-qualified manufacturers (Doosan, Hitachi, Westinghouse, Framatome) who hold the N-stamp for fabrication. We do not fabricate finished nuclear components.

What is the difference between A516 Gr.70 and A537 Cl.2 for penstock flanges?

A516 Gr.70 (normalized carbon-manganese-silicon steel) is the standard for moderate-pressure penstocks up to ~400m head. A537 Cl.2 (heat-treated C-Mn-Si) is for higher-pressure penstocks (400-700m head) due to its improved strength and impact toughness at low temperature. For very high head (700m+) or large diameters (NPS 40+), A537 Cl.2 is mandatory.

How do you certify materials for ultra-supercritical service?

For USC service we provide MTC 3.1 with: full chemical composition per heat, mechanical properties (tensile, yield, elongation), Charpy impact at -46°C (3 specimens, 18J average minimum), creep rupture test at 600°C / 100,000 hours (extrapolated Larson-Miller parameter), and hardness per ASTM E10. Each certificate is reviewable by your welding engineer.
